Frances Hagemann

d. September 5, 2020

Frances L. Hagemann, of French Canadian and Ojibwe-Metis heritage, Frances’ deep interest in the history of the tribal people of the Western Great Lakes began at an early age. With a B.S. degree in History Education and an M.A. in History, Frances began a very successful teaching career; first in the Chicago Public Schools and later at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Unable to find adequate teaching materials pertinent to American Indian History, she began to create her own, eventually sharing her work with other educators through journal articles and presentations at local, state, and national professional organizations as well as a contributing author and editor of textbooks. For a number of years, she spent much of her time as a scholar at the Newberry Library in Chicago as well as an active participant in the American Indian Community of the Chicago area; most notably as past president and long-time board member of the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian. Private services Wednesday, September 9, 2020.
