LaVergne Counter‑Barrix (née Mellin), age 76, of Lockport, IL, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025.
Born January 10, 1949, in Evergreen Park, IL, LaVergne was the cherished daughter of the late Lenore and Arthur Mellin. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl R. Counter.
LaVergne is survived by her devoted husband, Stephen Barrix, with whom she shared 36 years of love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. To Steve, she was simply Blondie—his best friend, his rock, and the bright light of every room they entered together.
She was a loving mother to her daughter Carrie Counter-Staedt and her son Earl Counter, and cherished her son-in-law Jeff Staedt and daughter-in-law Kristen Counter. LaVergne was a proud grandmother to Candice Roth (Dan), Alan Staedt (Ella), Tori Lehrer (Nicholas), Coco Counter, and Frances Counter. She is also survived by her stepson Charles Barrix (Lisa), and was blessed with three great-grandchildren who brought her tremendous joy.
Her surviving family also includes her beloved brother Arthur Mellin (Dorothy), whose constant love and support meant the world to her.
A lifelong beauty professional, LaVergne worked as a beautician and Estee Lauder Beauty Advisor, where her warmth and elegance left a lasting impression on clients and colleagues alike. She was a fierce and joyful competitor in the bowling lanes—earning multiple perfect 300 games—and was a proud member of her local Corvette Club, where she was known for her unmistakable yellow convertible Corvette. Whether cruising with the top down or shining it up for a show, that car was her pride and a symbol of her vibrant spirit.
LaVergne had a generous heart, a sharp wit, and an eye for all things beautiful. She loved time with her family, road trips with friends, and any excuse to wear a bold lipstick and hit the lanes. She was also a devoted dog lover, especially to her two beloved basset hounds, Otis and Norton, who were never far from her side and always brought a smile to her face.
Her laughter, loyalty, and unmistakable style will be missed beyond measure.
