John “Johnnie” Melker, Sr., 90, passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2021. John was born May 19, 1931 to John and Anna Melker in Chicago, Illinois, and had three younger siblings: Ellen, Amelia and Martin. Throughout his life, John worked as a semi-truck driver in Chicago and eventually retired from Roadway and Yellow Freight in his late 60s. During his free time, he had a great passion for waterskiing which he began in his 30s and continued into his 80s. During those years, he won numerous Illinois State, Midwest Regional, and National Waterskiing Championships. His love of waterskiing also allowed him to participate in Chicago’s famous Air and Water Show for many years. For several Christmas seasons, he wore a Santa Claus suit and flew a Delta Wing kite down the Chicago River. His wife and biggest fan, Iris, was always at his side, and he often declared she was the best boat driver ever! In addition to waterskiing, John was an active senior citizen and enjoyed playing tennis and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He also enjoyed snow-skiing and even took a trip with his family to ski in the Swiss Alps. John and his wife, Iris, were married from 1950 until her passing in 2002. They were blessed with children Linda (husband Gary), John (wife Tess), and Michael (deceased). John is also survived by granddaughters Rebecca, Melissa (husband Todd), Melody (husband Jason), Melanie and Macy, and great-grandsons Jackson and Greyson.
