George L. Asimakopoulos

George L. Asimakopoulos, 78, died on June 14, 2026.

George was born April 6, 1948, in Chicago to Louis and Fannie, joining his older sister Denise. After graduating early from Oak Park River Forest, George enrolled at UIC. He loved sharing how he was asked to leave after spending more time playing cards than attending classes. He eventually earned his degree from Elmhurst College, worked as an accountant and dabbled in entrepreneurship, before settling into his dream job at 57 as CFO of Four Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning.

Most important, though, was his family. After meeting Mariann, nee Zurales, at an AHEPA event, George took Mariann to Chicago Stadium to enjoy a Bulls game court side. One year after their first date, George and Mariann married during an extreme cold spell in January 1977. They were married 49 years. During that time, the pair enjoyed many long weekends in Las Vegas.

George was immensely proud of his children Jennifer and Lucas (Daisy). He spent countless hours coaching their JOY basketball games at Sts. Constantine & Helen Church, GOAL, Orthodox tournaments in Detroit, and more. He spent many years running the basketball tournaments of the Junior Olympics. George showed great patience with all of the kids he coached, continuing after his own children aged out.

The biggest joy of his life came with becoming a Papou to Olivia and Leo. He adored their antics, playing games, and listening to their imaginative stories.

He loved to read, eat, and travel, often combining the three. As a teen, he spent summers in Warren, Ohio, working at the family restaurant in exchange for all the french fries he could eat. His favorite ice cream was Handel’s chocolate pecan. Memorable family vacations included Hawaii and Disney World. Olivia remembers how, “We went on a lot of rides, we had so much fun with Papou and our entire family.”

A dedicated Chicago sports fan, George rooted on the Bears, Bulls, Sox, and Hawks–but never the Cubs. He continued a family tradition of bowling records, recording a 299 and keeping the 1 pin that didn’t fall (after his father Louis bowled a 289). He followed his mother’s example by completing crossword puzzles in ink.

George was a dear brother-in-law of Chris (Cathy) Zurales and Theodore (Christine) Zurales; and a caring uncle and cousin to many. All arrangements entrusted to Orrico Kourelis Funeral services Inc
