Douglas G. Koehler

Douglas “Doug” Koehler, age 72, passed away Monday, July 21 at Palos Community Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Feb. 5, 1953 in Chicago, Doug spent most of his life as a true “south side guy.”

After graduating from H. L. Richards High School (Oak Lawn) in 1971 and earning an Associate’s degree from Moraine Valley Community College, he worked for many years for the Chicago Ridge Public Works Department. In addition to his work in The Ridge, he spent many years working at Westgate Country Club in Palos Heights. Doug enjoyed many years on the golf course, both as an employee and as a golfer himself.

He spent his Sundays attending Chicago Bears games, and had been a season-ticket holder for decades. He often could be seen leaving very early in the morning to tailgate at Soldier Field before every home game. He also followed the White Sox and Blackhawks closely and loved to “talk sports” every chance he got! He bowled with his leagues at the former Mickadoon’s in Orland Park, El-Mar Bowl, and eventually at Palos Lanes, and was a member of Elks Lodge #1596, Crestwood.

He is survived by his children Anthony (Sarah) Koehler, Brian (Kim) Koehler, Allison (Matt) Messer, and Amanda (Hank) Dropkowski; one granddaughter, Madison; siblings Lori (George) Scolum; Lynn (John) Kaspar; Rita (Mike) Riley; Cheryl (Mark) Golbeck; Scott (Cairn) Schaal; and Karen Virgin; his longtime loving companion, Karen Alsot; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends, including Geno (Sharon) Lammel and the late Jim (Karen) Churms.

Visitation Monday from 3-8 PM at the Palos-Gaidas Funeral Home, 11028 Southwest Highway, Palos Hills, IL 60465. Funeral Services Tuesday 11 AM at Palos-Gaidas Funeral Home, with private procession and private interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The American Heart Association or St. Jude’s.
