Algis Matulis

By Algis Matulis passed away peacefully on September 3, 2026 at the age of 76 after a lengthy illness. Algis (Al) was born in Nottingham England on April 20, 1950 to the late Stasys and Sofija Matulis, both of Lithuanian decent. In 1960 he immigrated along with his family to the United States and ultimately settled in the Chicagoland area. Al, a lifelong student of history and geography was a degreed educator but opted for a career in quality control within the food industry before retiring at the age of 65. Al, a man of conviction, was deeply committed to his faith in the lord Jesus Christ, was a born-again Christian who after a near fatal bout with cancer in his late 20’s became a devoted believer in the lord. Al belonged to several area Christian churches but most recently was a member of Anchor Church Palos. Al was a lover of all living things with a special affection for his pet parakeets. Up until his death Al was a passionate collector of license plates and a member of both the Automobile License Plate Collector Association (ALPCA) and Mid-America Plate Association (MAPA). For almost 60 years Al pursed plates from all corners of the world amassing a collection of 35555 plates at the time of his death which he proudly displayed on every single wall within his long-timeresidence. Al, a fixture and legend within the license plate collector community, will be greatly missed by his license plate collector family. Al is proceeded in death by his parents and his twin brother Vincas. Al is survived by his sister-in-law Lynn, his church community, by many lifelong friends, and by the hundreds of license plate collectors who considered Al part of their family.

Family and friends will gather for a visitation on Thursday, September 10, 2026,12:00 p.m. until time of Funeral Service 2:00 p.m. at Ashburn Baptist Church 3647 W 83rd St, Chicago, IL 60652. Interment St. Casimir Lithuanian Cemetery.
