Aldona L. Sabalas

Aldona, a cherished, strong soul with a heart as big as her smile, passed away on August 6, 2026, leaving a legacy of love, laughter, and compassion. Born on February 9, 1953, into a close-knit Lithuanian community, in Chicago, IL, Aldona (Alda) was the beloved daughter of Frank and Birute Sabalas, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her devoted sister Kristina, her loving daughters and their husbands, Erika and Adam and Cyra and Mike, and her cherished grandchildren Adelaide, Nellie, Maddox, and Luna. Alda's family was the center of her world, and her love for them was immeasurable. Lovingly referred to as Mociute by her grandchildren, she often said, "My grandbabies are my heart," and her love for them was boundless.

A graduate of Maria High School, Alda dedicated her life to making a difference in the lives of children with special needs, particularly those with Autism. Her career was more than a job; it was a calling. She worked as a classroom aide, participated in the Special Olympics, served as a bus driver, and trained others in crisis intervention. Her genuine joy in connecting with students and their families was clear to all who knew her. Alda’s stories of her experiences with her students were filled with warmth and humor; reflecting the profound impact she had on their lives. She got to know a number of kind, caring people during her time at Easter Seals, many of whom she formed lasting friendships with throughout her many years with the company.

Alda's life was enriched by her passions and hobbies. She was an avid reader, often found with a new book in hand or reading lovingly to her grandchildren. Her love for nature was evident in her gardening pursuits and the joy she found in collecting beach rocks and sea glass. Alda’s creative spirit was a gift she shared with her grandchildren, engaging in crafts and games that filled their times together with laughter. While often being acknowledged for her impeccable taste, she had a fondness for jewelry, hats, and accessorizing; always done with a touch of elegance. With a splash of lemon and honey, she always started her day with a hot mug of tea. As the day would wind down, she enjoyed playing her puzzles and games on her iPad; a master at Words with Friends and Mahjong.

Known for her enthusiastic, strong, and friendly nature, Alda had a love language of giving to others. She was never without a huge hug or a big kiss for those she cared about, and her warmth touched the lives of many. Her vibrant spirit was always up for any adventure. In her retirement, Alda embraced the freedom to explore her interests, try new things, and spend precious time with her friends and family. Throughout her life, she found joy in music, dancing, travel, especially taking road trips with her sister, dipping her toes in the water and sand, playing volleyball, being involved with Lithuanian dance and scouts, and more recently participating in Tai Chi. A collector of all things handmade, Alda's home was a testament to her appreciation of life's simple, beautiful creations.

Alda’s family invites all who loved her and had the privilege of knowing her to a Celebration of Life to be held at South Shore Cultural Center on Sunday, August 30th starting at 2:00 P.M. The memorial will be followed by a meal to share together. Please join us as we gather to honor the memory of a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to her infectious laugh, her generous heart, her deep love and kindness, and the joy of living fully. In lieu of traditional black attire, please feel free to adorn yourself in color. Alda frequently loved wearing beautiful colors and often commented on how “muted” neutral colors were for her. Let’s celebrate her life in color!
